Can you just imagine Sam. He’s in some store, walking through the Christmas isle and he just looks nervous. And he looks at some Christmas decorations and he chews on the inside of his cheek because he’s not sure if these are the ones he should buy. Will Dean like this? Or will he just think it’s stupid? Maybe he should keep looking and see if there’s something else better he should buy.
But he decides eventually on what he wants and he’s standing in the checkout with an armful of Christmas decorations looking tall and awkward and hoping this will cheer Dean up because it’s stupid but this is actually kind of embarrassing him. Not that it should, because no one thinks he’s funny, he’s just another frazzled Christmas shopper but Sam’s not used to being normal. And he knew Dean would be chuckling at him if he was there.
But he hurries home and he dumps all the decorations on the couch and starts buzzing around the room, quickly hanging things on the tree, and putting up this horrible ‘Merry Christmas’ sign on the wall, right where Dean will see it when he walks in. He pours himself some eggnog and surveys the room. It looks pathetic Sam thinks, but he knows that if he sprung for the nicer stuff Dean wouldn’t have been any more impressed. And if he didn’t like this at least he could make his brother laugh.
Sam hoped he wouldn’t laugh at him though. This wasn’t something Sam was doing for himself after all. So when Sam heard his brother outside the door he felt anxious, and panicked and part of him regretted even thinking this was a good idea.
But Dean comes in and sees the room, sees Sam standing there with anticipation on his face, and when he asks what all this is, Sam answers Christmas.
And Dean looks happy, and all Sam’s thoughts that this was a stupid idea fly out the window.
if you think Sam doesn’t love Dean as much as Dean loves Sam, this episode proves you wrong. Even though Sam knows Dean will probably die soon, he does that for him, because he wants this, even though it hurts Sam like hell. All he needs is to see the look on Dean’s face when he sees all of this. And in the end of the episode, before they watch the game, there’s all those unsaid things in Sam’s eyes. All this deep and inexplicable llove for his brother, and he doesn’t really need to say it. Dean just knows.
